On a cold January morning in 2018, the quiet streets of Kansas City, Kansas, were disturbed by a grim discovery. Gerald W. Walsh, a 56-year-old Caucasian male, was found inside his pickup truck near 10th and Montana, having sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The truck had slowly drifted to a stop in the middle of 10th Street after the shooting. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Walsh was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he
succumbed to them. The local community was left in shock by the violent event that had unfolded in their neighborhood.
The Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division immediately launched a homicide investigation. As the day progressed, a suspect was identified: 28-year-old Jeremy L. Comstock. What followed was a dramatic and dangerous pursuit that crossed state lines. The high-speed chase began near Smithville, Missouri, and reached speeds of up to 100 mph. With a swarm of police vehicles in pursuit, Comstock drove erratically, weaving through traffic and crossing medians into oncoming lanes. Law enforcement was authorized to use any means necessary to halt the fleeing vehicle. The chase concluded on Interstate 35 in northern Kansas City, Missouri, when Comstock's van spun out of control.
As officers surrounded the disabled vehicle, shots were fired by the police, and Comstock was struck. His injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening. A woman who was also in the van with Comstock surrendered to the authorities without incident. Following his arrest, Jeremy L. Comstock was charged in Wyandotte County with first-degree murder for the death of Gerald Walsh. In addition to the murder charge, he also faced three counts of kidnapping. These kidnapping charges were related to other individuals who were present during the intense police pursuit. Comstock was held in custody in Kansas City, Missouri, following his dramatic capture.
