In the early morning hours of June 3, 2023, in Harvey, Louisiana, a burst of targeted gun violence ended the life of 27-year-old Jaevon Walton, an African American male. The incident unfolded around 4 a.m. in the 2100 block of Manhattan Boulevard. Responding deputies from the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office discovered Walton in the driver's seat of a vehicle, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite immediate medical attention, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into Walton's death quickly pointed to a suspect known to him, 28-year-old Damien Gaines. Authorities utilized surveillance footage and witness statements, which were pivotal in identifying Gaines as the alleged perpetrator. The evidence suggested that Gaines approached Walton's vehicle, fired multiple shots, and then fled. This information, combined with forensic data, led to his swift apprehension just days after the fatal shooting.
Damien Gaines was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Jaevon Walton's death. While law enforcement has indicated that the two men were acquainted, a specific motive for the shooting has not been publicly disclosed. Walton, a resident of Harvey and a native of Algiers, was a graduate of Edna Karr High School. He was a father and was employed as a driver for Amazon while also running his own personal training business. His death left his family and community mourning a life cut short.
