In the summer of 2017, a life was tragically cut short in Harvey, Louisiana. Eighteen-year-old Israel Davis, an African American male, was fatally wounded on July 24th of that year. The incident unfolded after Davis had an exchange with another individual and then got into a vehicle. As the car began to drive away, it was met with a hail of bullets. One of the rounds shattered the back windshield and struck Davis in the head, inflicting a mortal wound.
The flying glass also caused minor injuries to a one-year-old infant who was also inside the car.
The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that led to the arrests of two men in connection with the fatal shooting. Darryl Landers, who was 21 at the time, and 22-year-old Akiem Harris were taken into custody. Both men were subsequently charged with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted first-degree murder. The investigation suggested that Landers and Harris had opened fire on the vehicle, leading to the death of Israel Davis and the injury of the young child.
The motive behind the shooting was not made immediately clear in the initial reports. The community mourned the loss of the young man, who was remembered in his obituary as a loving father and son. His funeral was attended by a large gathering of family, friends, and community members seeking to pay their respects and find solace in the wake of a senseless act of violence.
