In what began as a seemingly straightforward transaction facilitated by an online marketplace, a young man's life was tragically cut short. Joseph Vindel, a 29-year-old male, set out on the morning of March 7, 2021, with his dirt bike in tow, expecting to meet a potential buyer in Harvey, Louisiana. The prospective buyer, who had responded to Vindel's online advertisement, was later identified as Jalen Harvey. The agreed-upon meeting place was an apartment complex where Harvey resided.
This transaction, however, was destined for a violent and fatal conclusion.
Upon his arrival, Vindel, a recently licensed real estate agent and a graduate of Tulane University, was shot multiple times while still seated in his own SUV. The assailant, Jalen Harvey, then moved Vindel's body into the back of the vehicle. With the dirt bike still attached, Harvey drove the SUV for over an hour, eventually abandoning it with Vindel's body inside in the Garden District of New Orleans. He then rode the stolen dirt bike back to his apartment complex. When Joseph Vindel failed to return home, his family grew concerned and reported him missing, setting in motion an investigation that would soon uncover the grim reality of his disappearance.
The investigation quickly led authorities to Jalen Harvey. Detectives discovered messages between Harvey and Vindel concerning the sale of the dirt bike. Their investigation led them to Harvey's apartment, where they found the dirt bike. Inside the apartment, they also located the weapon believed to have been used in the murder. Harvey was arrested and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, and obstruction of justice. It was later revealed that Harvey had intended to use counterfeit 'play money' to carry out the robbery.
Jalen Harvey was convicted of first-degree murder for the death of Joseph Vindel. In October 2022, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, heart-wrenching impact statements were delivered by Vindel's family and friends, who remembered him as a beloved individual full of promise. In the wake of this tragedy, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office established 'Joseph Vindel Memorial Safe Exchange Zones' at two of their locations to provide a safer environment for individuals to conduct online marketplace transactions.
