In the pre-dawn hours of January 9, 2023, the life of 39-year-old Jose Antonio Soto, a Hispanic male, was violently cut short on the streets of Las Vegas. At approximately 2:47 a.m., officers from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 1800 block of Franklin Avenue, near Charleston Boulevard and Eastern Avenue, following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Soto lying unresponsive in the street, having sustained apparent gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel were summoned to the scene but were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead.
Investigators pieced together the harrowing final moments of Soto's life, revealing that he had been chased down the street by an assailant who then opened fire before fleeing the area. The Clark County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Soto died from gunshot wounds to his head and back, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. In the immediate aftermath, the police appealed to the public for any information regarding Soto or the shooting as they worked to identify the person responsible for his death.
The investigation into Soto's murder led detectives to a suspect who was already in custody for another violent crime. On February 16, 2023, authorities identified 42-year-old Jesus Gonzalez as the man responsible for Soto's death. Gonzalez was incarcerated at the Clark County Detention Center on an open murder charge for the killing of 37-year-old Ashleigh Figearo, which had occurred just a day before Soto's murder, on January 8, 2023. With this new evidence, Gonzalez was rebooked on an additional count of open murder with a deadly weapon for the death of Jose Soto.
Further investigation would reveal an even more disturbing pattern of violence. Gonzalez was later linked to a third homicide, that of 62-year-old Mary McClelland, who was found dead in her home on January 9, 2023, the same day as Soto's murder. A grand jury indicted Gonzalez for all three murders, and prosecutors are reportedly considering seeking the death penalty due to the multiple killings. Jesus Gonzalez remains in custody, awaiting trial for the series of murders he is alleged to have committed.
