In the crisp early evening of March 7, 2023, the life of 19-year-old Walker Lewis Whatley III, a Black/African American male, was tragically cut short by gunfire in Indianapolis, Indiana. The fatal incident unfolded just outside the former Thomas Carr Howe High School, located in the city's Irvington neighborhood. While a basketball game was underway inside the building, the scene outside turned violent around 8:20 p.m., when police were dispatched following a report of a person shot.
Upon their arrival at the 4900 block of Julian Avenue, officers discovered Whatley suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department promptly began an investigation into the homicide, seeking to piece together the events that led to the deadly shooting.
In the initial stages of the investigation, authorities were able to detain a person of interest, a development that was aided by the cooperation of community members who came forward with information.
