In the spring of 2024, the life of 16-year-old Keith Louis Ray was tragically cut short on a street on the near northwest side of Indianapolis. On the evening of April 11th, police responded to a call and found the young man lying in the street, the victim of a fatal shooting. He was pronounced dead at the scene, becoming the first teenager lost to gun violence in the city that year.
His family remembers him as a student at Pike High School, looking forward to his senior year and graduation, a milestone he would never reach.
The investigation into the shooting unfolded over several months. In a significant development, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced in September the arrest of 21-year-old Gershom Hannah in connection with Keith Ray's death. The case against Hannah suggests the fatal shooting was the result of an attempted robbery that turned deadly. Detectives believe the incident was connected to another shooting that occurred around the same time, where a man arrived at a local hospital with a critical gunshot wound. This second victim was expected to survive.
Following his arrest, Gershom Hannah faced serious charges, including felony murder, attempted murder, and robbery. During the course of the investigation, another man, 22-year-old Rayvonce Norris, was also taken into custody after attempting to flee from the police. Norris was subsequently charged with possession of narcotics and resisting law enforcement. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office is now responsible for the final charging decisions in the case against Hannah, who is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
