Cameron Dixon, 30, a Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, died on Aug. 4, 2020, after gunfire ended a morning that began like any other on the city’s near-north side. Police were called to the 3000 block of North Capitol Avenue, where Dixon was found inside a vehicle in the parking lot of Vickie’s Discount Liquors, suffering from a gunshot wound. By the time officers reached the lot, the damage had already been done, and Dixon was pronounced dead at the scene.
In the hours that followed, the area became a tight circle of tape and slow-moving uniforms as homicide detectives worked their way through the first hard steps of an investigation: securing the scene, looking for anyone who might have seen a vehicle pull in or out, and trying to piece together what happened before the shot or shots were fired. A forensic team was brought in to identify and collect evidence from the car and the surrounding parking lot, the kind of careful work meant to preserve whatever trace the shooter left behind.
