On the evening of August 29, 2024, a shooting in a residential area on the northeast side of Indianapolis claimed the life of Michael Alvin Edwards Jr. He was a 57-year-old Black man. Around 8:15 p.m., officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a person shot in the 3400 block of North Leland Avenue. They arrived to find Mr. Edwards inside a vehicle, suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, but he did not survive his injuries.
Born on February 28, 1967, Michael Edwards was remembered by his family and friends weeks after his death. A visitation and a Celebration of Life service were held for him on Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Church of the Living God in Indianapolis, where his community gathered to honor his memory.
Homicide detectives began an investigation into the shooting. Less than a month later, on September 20, 2024, police announced that they had made an arrest in the killing. The suspect was identified as 32-year-old Thomas Mason Jr.
Following the arrest, the case proceeded to the courts. Thomas Mason Jr. faced a trial in February 2026, but the proceedings ended when the jury was unable to reach a verdict. Several months later, on June 9, 2026, Mason pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. This plea concluded the legal proceedings in the case.
