In the fall of 2021, a grim discovery on the south side of Indianapolis brought an end to the search for a missing teenager and unraveled a story of a deadly betrayal. The body of 18-year-old Joseph Thomas, who had been reported missing on October 10, 2021, was found two days later in a grassy area in the 4400 block of South Meridian Street. He was not alone. Alongside him were the bodies of 22-year-old Michael James and 17-year-old Abdulla Mubarak.
All three young men had been shot to death in what the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department quickly determined to be a triple homicide.
The investigation into the deaths of Thomas, James, and Mubarak soon pointed to a suspect who was just 16 years old at the time of the killings. Caden Smith was identified by investigators through his communications with the victims prior to their deaths. The motive behind the brutal slayings was revealed to be a robbery, with a chilling twist. Smith had reportedly lured the three young men to the secluded location under the pretense of demonstrating a 'Glock switch,' a device that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic weapon. It was during this demonstration that he turned the weapon on them.
Charged as an adult, Caden Smith faced a jury for his crimes. During the trial, evidence was presented that linked him to the murders, including the discovery of the murder weapon at his residence. In August 2024, the jury found Smith guilty on three counts of murder, as well as additional charges of felony murder, robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, and dangerous possession of a firearm.
The following month, a Marion County judge handed down a sentence that reflected the gravity of the crimes. Caden Smith, by then 19 years old, was sentenced to 189 years in prison for the murders of Joseph Thomas, Michael James, and Abdulla Mubarak. The lengthy sentence ensures that the young man responsible for the deaths of three others will likely spend the remainder of his life behind bars, a stark conclusion to a case that began with the disappearance of a teenager and ended with the conviction of his even younger killer.
