In the summer of 2023, a shooting on the near northeast side of Indianapolis claimed the life of 35-year-old Justin Lamont Burrell. A Black male, Burrell was fatally wounded on the evening of June 9, 2023. The incident unfolded shortly after 9 p.m. in the 2900 block of Station Street, near East 30th Street and North Sherman Drive.
Responding to a report of a person shot, officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived to find Burrell inside a residence, suffering
from gunshot wounds. Despite initial reports that he was in critical condition, he was pronounced dead at the scene. This tragic event marked the city's 100th homicide of the year, a grim milestone that prompted concern from local law enforcement about the rise in violence.
In the wake of the shooting, police have not publicly identified any suspects or a possible motive. The case remains unsolved, and authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
