Eugene N. Luther, a Deputy Sheriff with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office, tragically lost his life on April 25, 1980, at the age of 50. On that fateful evening, Deputy Luther was off duty and had just left a restaurant in the northern area of Sacramento. As he approached his car in the parking lot around 10 p.m., he was confronted by an armed individual who demanded all his money. In an attempt to defend himself, Deputy Luther drew his small caliber handgun.
Unfortunately, the suspect fired first, fatally wounding Deputy Luther. Despite being shot, Deputy Luther managed to return fire and it is believed that he may have struck the suspect. Deputy Luther succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into Deputy Luther's murder was exhaustive, yet no one has ever been prosecuted for the crime. The suspect who shot Deputy Luther was never identified, and the case remains unsolved. This tragic event has left a lasting impact on the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and the community. Deputy Luther's name has been memorialized in several locations, including the California Peace Officers Memorial Foundation's bronze monument in downtown Sacramento, the Sacramento Police & Sheriff Memorial, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, D.C. Efforts have been made to correct the misspelling of his name on various memorials, as it was mistakenly formalized to Eugene instead of Gene.
Despite the passage of time, the murder of Deputy Luther continues to be a poignant reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers. The lack of resolution in the case has been a source of frustration and sorrow for his family, colleagues, and the broader community.
