In the early hours of July 5, 2025, the festive atmosphere of Indianapolis's Fourth of July celebrations was shattered by a mass shooting in the heart of downtown. The incident, which occurred around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Illinois and Washington Street, claimed the life of 16-year-old Xavion Jackson and 15-year-old Azareaon S. Cole. Five other individuals, ranging in age from 15 to 21, were also wounded in the burst of gunfire.
For Xavion's mother, the tragedy was compounded by the fact that he was the third son she had lost to gun violence.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were already in the area responding to a different disturbance when they heard the gunshots. They arrived at a chaotic scene where they discovered multiple people with gunshot wounds. Several firearms were recovered at the scene, and a number of people were initially detained for questioning. The shooting prompted a strong response from city officials, who lamented the escalating youth violence and the presence of large, unsupervised groups of teenagers downtown.
In the days following the shooting, authorities announced the arrests of four teenagers, aged 13, 15, 16, and 17, on charges including dangerous possession of a firearm, resisting law enforcement, and obstruction of justice. Vincent Lanking, the 17-year-old, is being charged as an adult. However, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office has stated that these charges are not directly related to the mass shooting itself but stemmed from other disturbances in the downtown area over the holiday weekend.
As of late 2025, the investigation into the murders of Xavion Jackson and Azareaon S. Cole is ongoing. Law enforcement officials have been reviewing video footage from the area in an effort to identify the individuals responsible for the shooting. To date, no suspects have been publicly identified or arrested specifically for the killings of the two teenagers. The community continues to mourn the loss of two young lives as they await further developments in the search for justice.
