In a quiet apartment complex in Lawrence, a suburb of Indianapolis, a family dispute on August 13, 2023, ended in the death of 27-year-old Oliver Johnson. The young man was discovered by police inside an apartment in the 7100 block of Foxborough Drive, unresponsive on the kitchen floor. He was pronounced dead at the scene from what was later determined to be two gunshot wounds.
The initial call to law enforcement suggested an altercation between close family members.
When officers arrived, they found Oliver Johnson holding a wooden baseball bat. The subsequent investigation into his death quickly focused on his father, 53-year-old Rolf Johnson. According to court documents, Rolf Johnson had contacted his other son, instructing him to call the police. In that conversation, he claimed that Oliver had attempted to strike him and that he had retaliated, possibly with a hammer. However, the coroner's findings of gunshot wounds contradicted this initial account.
Investigators at the scene discovered an AR-15-style rifle and a handgun on a cot near Oliver's body, along with a bullet casing and a hole in the apartment wall. Rolf Johnson was not present when the police first arrived but was located and arrested a short time later in a nearby town. Officers noted what appeared to be blood on his pants at the time of his arrest. He was subsequently booked into the Marion County Jail and is facing a murder charge in connection with his son's death. He is being held without bond as the legal proceedings continue.
