On January 14, 2014, 34-year-old African American male Ray L. Ivory Jr. was fatally shot in Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident occurred in the evening around 6:30 p.m. on the 1500 block of Cumberland Road on the city's east side. Ivory was reportedly the target of a robbery attempt when he was struck by gunfire, suffering a gunshot wound to the head.
He was transported to a local hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries and passed away on January 15, 2014.
Investigators quickly identified a suspect in the case, a 16-year-old named Avis Lacy. Despite his age, prosecutors charged Lacy as an adult in connection with Ivory's death, alleging that the teenager shot the victim during the course of the robbery. Lacy was arrested and faced charges including murder, with authorities claiming he was the individual responsible for pulling the trigger.
The case eventually went to trial, where the details of the shooting were presented before a court. In April, a jury returned a verdict in the matter, finding the teen suspect not guilty of the shooting death. The acquittal meant that Lacy was cleared of the charges related to Ivory's murder, concluding the legal proceedings against him for this specific crime without a conviction.
