On July 7, 2021, a 20-year-old Black male named Daniel 'Paxton' Shields was found critically injured in a vehicle on the northeast side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to a report of a person shot just after 4:30 p.m. in the 8800 block of Bel Air Drive, near the intersection of 38th Street and Post Road. Upon arrival, first responders discovered Shields inside a car suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was immediately transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The marion County Coroner's Office subsequently ruled the death a homicide.
Shields was known to his family and friends as 'Paxton' and worked as an electrician's apprentice, focusing on wiring both new and older homes. He was the youngest of six siblings born to parents David and Laura Shields and was described as a devoted father to a young son named Amir. His obituary noted his strong faith, sense of humor, and artistic interests. At the time of the shooting, he had been pursuing his trade and raising his child, with his sudden death leaving a significant void in his immediate and extended family.
Despite an investigation launched by homicide detectives and the collection of evidence from the scene by the Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency, the case has faced challenges in identifying a perpetrator. As of the most recent public reports, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. Authorities have kept the investigation open and have previously urged anyone with information regarding the incident to contact the IMPD Homicide Office or Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana to assist in solving the case.
