On the evening of Thursday, September 7, 2023, a violent incident unfolded in Lawrence, Indiana, a municipality on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The victim was identified as 17-year-old male Mekhi Reeves. The sequence of events began when Reeves was operating a vehicle near the intersection of East 49th Street and Shadeland Avenue, specifically in a residential area along Leon Drive.
While driving, he was targeted by gunfire, sustaining critical injuries that caused him to lose control of the car. The vehicle subsequently veered off the road and collided with a fire hydrant before coming to a stop.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the teenager suffering from a gunshot wound. He was urgently transported to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Reeves succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
