In a moment of workplace tension that spiraled into irreversible tragedy, 46-year-old Oswaldo Cruz-Lopez lost his life in Indianapolis, Indiana. The fatal encounter unfolded on May 24, 2021, at an apartment complex located near 38th Street and Mitthoeffer Road, where both he and his assailant were employed. An argument between Cruz-Lopez and his co-worker, Alejandro Leon Barroso, escalated with shocking suddenness, culminating in a burst of gunfire that left Cruz-Lopez fatally wounded.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot in the 10000 block of Governours Lane shortly after 2:30 p.m. Upon their arrival, they discovered Cruz-Lopez suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Homicide detectives immediately launched an investigation into the shooting.
The investigation quickly pointed to Alejandro Leon Barroso as the suspect. Other employees at the apartment complex informed investigators that Barroso had admitted to shooting Cruz-Lopez. In a seemingly bizarre turn of events, Barroso left the gun and magazines he had used at the front desk of the apartment complex. Police confiscated the weapon when they arrested him.
Following his arrest, Alejandro Leon Barroso was charged with the murder of Oswaldo Cruz-Lopez. The case proceeded through the justice system, and Barroso was ultimately convicted of murder. In January 2023, he was sentenced to 52 years in prison for the senseless act of violence that cut short the life of Oswaldo Cruz-Lopez.
