The young African American male was at his home in the Amber Woods Apartments on the city’s east side when the incident occurred. Emergency responders were called to the residence in the 3500 block of North Wittfield Street after reports of a person shot.
Upon arrival, they discovered the child suffering from a gunshot wound that was determined to be self-inflicted. He was rushed to Riley Hospital for Children in critical condition but was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
The investigation revealed that the boy had found a firearm inside the apartment and accidentally shot himself. His mother, Monick Mack, and another adult relative were reportedly outside in a vehicle at the time of the shooting, while the child was inside with his sister. According to statements provided to the police, the boy had jumped from a piece of furniture and grabbed the weapon, which his father, Billy Boyd, later claimed had been placed in a 'safe spot' out of reach. The death was ruled accidental, but it sparked an investigation into the supervision of the child and the accessibility of the firearm.
Months after the fatal incident, legal consequences followed for the child's mother. in August 2023, authorities arrested 27-year-old Monick Mack and charged her with neglect of a dependent resulting in death, a felony offense. The charges stemmed from allegations that she failed to secure the firearm properly and provide adequate supervision, leading to her son's untimely death. While the father was interviewed by the media and defended the storage of the weapon, police records indicated that the mother was the primary suspect facing prosecution for the negligence that allowed the six-year-old to access the gun.
