In the late afternoon of November 23, 2016, the life of 20-year-old Evans F. Johnson, a male resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, was tragically cut short in a fatal shooting. His death was part of a grim sequence of events that also claimed the life of his 21-year-old girlfriend, Jessica Downey. The couple had recently relocated to Indianapolis from Vincennes with their young child, hoping for a fresh start.
The discovery of Downey, shot inside her car in the 2300 block of Adams Street,
was the first indication of the violence that had unfolded. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries days later. A little over two hours after Downey was found, police were dispatched to an alley in the 2400 block of Oxford Street, where they found Evans Johnson unresponsive. He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department quickly connected the two shootings and determined that Johnson and Downey were in a relationship. In the course of their investigation, authorities released surveillance footage that captured two persons of interest walking with Johnson shortly before he was killed. The video shows the two individuals walking ahead of Johnson, and then running away after the shooting.
Despite public pleas for information from law enforcement and the case being featured in IMPD's 'Unsolved' series, the murders of Evans Johnson and Jessica Downey remain unresolved. No arrests have been made, and no suspects have been officially named in connection with the double homicide. The investigation remains open as authorities continue to seek information from the public that could lead to a breakthrough in the case.
