In the spring of 2021, a burst of violence on a quiet street in Richmond, Indiana, cut short the life of 26-year-old Chad Mullins. On the night of April 17th, police responded to a call in the 200 block of North 13th Street to find Mullins with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. Emergency services transported him first to a local hospital, after which he was flown to Miami Valley Hospital for more advanced care.
Despite the efforts of medical teams, the young man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, April 18, 2021.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting left the community with questions and a sense of unease. Investigators began piecing together the events of that night, gathering evidence from a nearby residence and speaking with witnesses. A description emerged of a suspect, a short male wearing a dark facemask, who was seen leaving the area in a dark-colored car shortly after the shooting. For months, the case remained a priority for the Richmond Police Department as they worked to bring justice for Mullins and his family. The investigation continued for over a year and a half, stretching across state lines.
A significant breakthrough came in December 2022, when authorities located their suspect hundreds of miles away. Tayshawn Newman was found in Sparks, Nevada, and taken into custody on December 9, 2022. An outstanding warrant had been issued for his arrest in connection with the killing. Newman faced charges of murder and possession of a handgun without a license. Following his capture, he was held in the Washoe County Jail, awaiting extradition back to Wayne County, Indiana, to face the legal consequences of the night that ended Chad Mullins' life.
