In the early hours of a Tuesday morning in Richmond, Indiana, the life of Antwone-Tremell Montre Carpenter was tragically cut short. On May 29, 2018, the 18-year-old high school senior was discovered with a gunshot wound in the front yard of an apartment building on North 15th Street. Police responded to a call about a person down around 12:15 a.m. and found Carpenter.
He was initially taken to Reid Hospital before being airlifted to Miami Valley Hospital for surgery, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. At the time of his death, Carpenter was a popular student and standout athlete at Richmond High School, where he was a member of both the football and basketball teams.
The news of Carpenter's death sent shockwaves through the community, particularly at his high school, which was already mourning the recent loss of another student. The school held a moment of silence to honor both Carpenter and a freshman who had drowned on Memorial Day. Described as an energetic young man with a contagious personality, Carpenter was known for his love of fashion and his caring and genuine spirit. He was just days away from his high school graduation.
In the days following the shooting, Richmond police identified 18-year-old Austin Neathery as the primary suspect in Carpenter's homicide. An arrest warrant for murder was issued, and Neathery was considered armed and dangerous. Believed to have fled the area shortly after the incident, Neathery became the subject of a search that ended on June 13, 2018. U.S. Marshals located and arrested him near an apartment complex in Speedway, Indiana. He was subsequently booked into the Marion County Jail on a murder charge, awaiting transfer to Wayne County.
