The incident, which unfolded in the 1400 block of New Paris Pike, also resulted in the serious injury of Day's mother, 72-year-old Brenda Day, who was shot in the abdomen but survived. The conflict reportedly stemmed from an ongoing argument over a driveway.
Responding to a report of a possible shooting shortly before 7 p.m.,
police officers arrived at the scene to find two individuals with gunshot wounds. John Day was pronounced dead at the location. In the immediate aftermath of the violent encounter, authorities identified a suspect and took him into custody.
Elick Tywayne Allen, a 41-year-old man from Richmond, was arrested in connection with the shootings. He faced preliminary charges of murder and attempted murder. The case proceeded through the legal system, and in June 2024, a jury found Allen guilty of the murder of John Day and the attempted murder of Brenda Day.
Following his conviction, Elick T. Allen was sentenced to 85 years in prison for his role in the deadly confrontation. The resolution of the case brought a measure of justice for the Day family and the community, with law enforcement officials emphasizing their commitment to holding violent offenders accountable.
