In the early morning hours of September 19, 2012, in Detroit, Michigan, the life of 19-year-old Tamika Brooks, an African-American female, was tragically cut short. Described by her family as a fun, lovable, and good-natured young woman, Tamika had her whole life ahead of her. She was a mother to a two-year-old daughter and had aspirations of becoming a nurse.
On that fateful day, Tamika and a man named Julian Bogan were inside a car on Oakfield Avenue, just north of McNichols Road, when
they were both shot. While Bogan managed to escape and survive his injuries, Tamika did not. Following the shooting, the vehicle was doused with gasoline and set on fire with her still inside. The responding Detroit Police Department found Tamika deceased within the burning car. Her body was so severely burned that she had to be identified using dental records, a grim task that fell to her devastated family.
For years, Tamika's case remained a cold case, leaving her family in a painful state of uncertainty as they searched for answers and closure. The investigation was ongoing, with detectives believing that there were witnesses who had yet to come forward. The family held on to memories and pictures, keeping her spirit alive while desperately hoping for a breakthrough in the case. They struggled with the lack of progress and the knowledge that the person or persons responsible for her violent death were still at large.
A significant development in the case finally came in January 2020, over seven years after Tamika's death. The U.S. Marshals Service apprehended a woman named Lauren Ratliff in Anderson, South Carolina, in connection with the crime. An investigation had placed Ratliff in Detroit at the time of the murder. On January 22, 2020, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office charged Ratliff with first-degree murder, assault with intent to murder, armed robbery, and two counts of unlawful imprisonment. Following her arrest, Ratliff was extradited to Michigan to face trial for her alleged involvement in the brutal slaying of Tamika Brooks and the attempted murder of Julian Bogan.
