In the late-night hours of October 2, 2023, in Monroe, Georgia, the sound of gunfire broke the evening's calm. Just before 11 p.m., the City of Monroe Police Department received calls about shots being discharged in the Tanglewood area. While officers were on their way, another 911 call directed them to North Broad Street near G.W. Carver Drive, where they discovered two victims of the shooting.
Upon arrival, police found 19-year-old Dameon Johnson and 18-year-old Cody Hall, both having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Officers immediately began rendering first aid to the two young men. Emergency medical services transported both Johnson and Hall to Piedmont Athens Regional hospital for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Dameon Johnson succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
The Monroe Police Department launched an active investigation into the double shooting, seeking help from the public for any information regarding the incident. Their efforts, with assistance from the Walton County Sheriff's Office and the Walton County District Attorney's Office, led to a breakthrough. On October 17, 2023, authorities announced the arrest of three juveniles in connection with the shooting. The identities of the suspects were not released due to their status as minors. The three were charged with felony murder and other criminal offenses. The investigation was reported to be ongoing following the arrests.
