On a Sunday in May 2023, a dispute between neighbors in Monroe, Georgia, turned deadly, leaving a young man's life cut short. Chandler Ryan Martin, a 23-year-old White man, was fatally shot on May 7, 2023. The incident, described as a senseless act of violence, stemmed from ongoing tensions that tragically escalated.

That day, Martin was with another individual at a home on River Run Road when they were confronted by a neighbor. An argument ensued, reportedly over ongoing issues between the neighbors. The confrontation took a violent turn when the neighbor, identified as 77-year-old Opel Wesley Lackey, produced a handgun. Lackey is reported to have first shot Martin and then the other individual, who sustained injuries but survived. Martin was pronounced dead at the scene.

Law enforcement quickly identified Lackey as the shooter, and he was taken into custody at his neighboring home. He was subsequently arrested and faced multiple charges, including murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Family members of Lackey indicated that there was a history of conflict with his neighbors, alleging that he had been subjected to harassment.

Ultimately, a Walton County jury found Opel Lackey guilty of felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during a felony. Following the conviction, the court sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
