On a tragic Friday afternoon in Monroe, Georgia, the life of 27-year-old Henry Thomas McDougal was cut short. On October 16, 2020, the lifelong resident of Monroe was shot multiple times and succumbed to his injuries. A dedicated employee of Super Hero Fire Protection in Lawrenceville for four years, Henry was known for his close connections to his family and community.
The events of that day unfolded at a residence off Jack Glass Road. Walton County Sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call about a shooting at approximately 4:35 p.m.. Upon their arrival, they discovered Henry suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical attention and being transported to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist with the subsequent homicide investigation.
The investigation quickly identified a primary suspect: Henry's older brother, 31-year-old James Lewis McDougal. Reports from the investigation indicate that James approached his younger brother as Henry was getting out of his work vehicle and shot him multiple times. Henry attempted to escape, but his brother pursued him and shot him again. Shortly after the incident, James Lewis McDougal surrendered to the authorities.
James Lewis McDougal was arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Ultimately, he pleaded guilty to malice murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. On May 10, 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his brother.
