Just days before Christmas in 2014, the life of Quintaurus 'Goat' Brooks, a 28-year-old African American male, was tragically cut short in Monroe, Georgia. On the evening of December 22nd, his home on Windsor Drive became the scene of a violent home invasion. Assailants, later identified as being from the Stone Mountain area, forcibly entered the residence under the guise of being DEA agents. A struggle broke out, and in the ensuing chaos, Brooks was shot. He was rushed to Clearview Regional Medical Center, but the severity of his injuries proved to be fatal, and he passed away shortly after arrival.
The investigation into the homicide led authorities to two primary suspects: Mario Romaon Sullivan and Ellis Meon Smith Jr. Both men were subsequently charged with a string of serious offenses, including Malice Murder, Felony Murder, Attempted Armed Robbery, 1st Degree Home Invasion, Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon During a Crime. The legal process for the two accused would take different paths. In August of 2018, Ellis Meon Smith Jr. chose to plead guilty to his role in the crime and was handed a sentence of life in prison for his involvement in the death of Quintaurus Brooks.
Mario Romaon Sullivan, on the other hand, opted for a trial by jury. In 2019, after hearing testimony from over twenty witnesses, the jury took less than an hour to deliberate before returning a guilty verdict on all charges. Sullivan was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 60 years. It was later revealed that both Sullivan and Smith had prior convictions for a home invasion and armed robbery that had occurred in Floyd County, Georgia, in January of 2015. More recently, in August of 2024, it was reported that Mario Romaon Sullivan was seeking a new trial, with a motion hearing scheduled in the Alcovy Judicial Circuit Superior Court.
