In the late hours of a Saturday in Monroe, Georgia, a tragic series of events unfolded, leaving two young men dead in what investigators believe was a murder-suicide. On April 24, 2021, Jevaun Campbell, a 23-year-old Black male, was found deceased in his vehicle from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. His death was the final act in a devastating sequence that began earlier that evening.
The incident started shortly after 10 p.m. when Monroe police officers responded to a call about a shooting on Gliding Lane. Upon arrival, they discovered 21-year-old Tyreke Mardrell Strozier with a gunshot wound to the chest. Strozier was transported to Piedmont Walton Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. According to police reports, two teenage boys at the residence told officers that Campbell had come to the house wanting to see a woman who was the mother of his child.
Witnesses reported that Campbell went directly to a bedroom where he found Strozier with the woman. Yelling was heard, followed by two gunshots. Campbell then exited the room, visibly upset, and quickly left the home. While investigators were at the scene of the first shooting, another call came in about a car that had crashed into a wooded area on East Church Street, not far from the initial crime scene.
Inside the crashed black Nissan Altima, officers found Jevaun Campbell slumped over in the driver's seat. He had a gunshot wound to his chest and was pronounced dead at the scene. The preliminary investigation led authorities to link the two shootings, classifying the case as a possible murder-suicide. The investigation into the deaths of both Jevaun Campbell and Tyreke Strozier remained active as police worked to identify all individuals involved and piece together the full story of that fatal night.
