A tragic and violent series of events in early February 1995, culminated in the death of 19-year-old Mario Colquitt, a Black male from Monroe, Georgia. The devastating incident, which unfolded in a hospital emergency room, also claimed the lives of two other teenagers.
The unfortunate chain of events began when Colquitt's 18-year-old cousin, Tyrone Durden, was shot. Trying to save him, Colquitt rushed Durden to the Walton County hospital for emergency medical treatment. As medical personnel were attending to Durden, the initial shooter, 17-year-old Michael Barrett, entered the emergency room.
A confrontation then erupted between Colquitt and Barrett. The altercation quickly escalated, and in the ensuing struggle, both Colquitt and Barrett were shot. The violence that began outside the hospital ultimately ended within its walls, leaving three young men dead. Mario Colquitt, his cousin Tyrone Durden, and their assailant, Michael Barrett, all died from their injuries. Since the person responsible for the emergency room shooting, Michael Barrett, was also killed, there were no subsequent arrests or legal proceedings.
