On a tragic evening in Columbus, Georgia, the life of a promising university student was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Kayla Jenkins, a 23-year-old Black female, was killed on May 19, 2024. A student at Columbus State University, her future was abruptly ended by multiple gunshot wounds. The incident unfolded at the Lowell Apartments located in the 4700 block of Milgen Road.
The Columbus Police Department and the Muscogee County Coroner's Office were called to the scene.
Upon arrival, they discovered Kayla Jenkins deceased outside one of the apartment buildings. Further investigation inside led to the discovery of a second individual, 27-year-old Deandre Kenoil Jones, also deceased from a gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that the event was a homicide-suicide.
It is believed that Deandre Jones, who had been in a relationship with Kayla for a couple of months, drove from Fairburn, Georgia, to her apartment complex. There, he shot and killed Jenkins before taking his own life. As the perpetrator was also deceased, no arrests were made in connection with Kayla Jenkins' murder. The case, while officially closed due to the death of the suspect, left a community in mourning and raised questions about the circumstances that led to such a devastating outcome.
