In the summer of 2019, a tragic event unfolded in the Oakland Park area of Columbus, Georgia, forever altering the sense of security in the quiet neighborhood. On June 29th, the body of 70-year-old Chong Cha Dyer, a Korean-American businesswoman, was discovered in a storage shed behind her home on Lucky Street. The grim discovery was made after her grandson grew concerned when he found her purse, cell phone, and vehicle at the residence, but no sign of his grandmother.
An investigation
by the Columbus Police Department revealed that Dyer had been shot multiple times before being left in the locked shed. Detectives soon began to focus on robbery as a possible motive. Dyer was a well-known figure in the local business community, having owned two bars, including Grays Bar on South Lumpkin Road. Investigators believe it was widely known that she had recently sold one of her businesses for a substantial amount of money. On the day of her murder, it is also believed she was in contact with someone about selling some items she no longer wanted.
Despite the passing of years, the murder of Chong Cha Dyer remains unsolved, and no arrests have been made in connection with her death. Her case has not been forgotten, however. In an effort to generate new leads, the Columbus Police Department partnered with a local news station to feature her story in a series called 'Beyond The Yellow Tape.' The program revisited the details of the brutal crime and highlighted the lasting grief of her loved ones in the hope that someone with information will come forward. A reward is being offered for any information that leads to an arrest, and authorities continue to urge the public to contact the Violent Crimes Unit with any potential leads.
