In the late hours of August 8, 2022, the life of Nevaeh Nevels, a 19-year-old Black mother from Columbus, Georgia, was violently taken. Known to friends and family as a caring and selfless young woman who attended CVCC, Nevaeh was described as a "jack of all trades" who did tattoos, nails, and makeup. Her death left a devastating void, especially for her two-year-old daughter.
Her mother, Brandy Nevels, later expressed the family's profound grief, sharing the painful reality of her granddaughter repeatedly asking when her mother would be coming home.
The tragedy unfolded just before midnight in the parking lot of Wild Bill's Jewelry and Pawn on Buena Vista Road. According to authorities, the incident began with a car chase. A suspect pursued the vehicle Nevaeh was driving down Buena Vista Road. After turning onto a few side streets, Nevaeh entered the pawn shop parking lot, where she clipped a curb and spun out. The suspect then reportedly got out of his car and opened fire on her vehicle. Nevaeh was struck by multiple gunshots and was pronounced dead at the scene. A second young woman in the car with her was critically injured and rushed to the hospital, where she was placed in an induced coma.
The Columbus Police Department investigation quickly led to a suspect, who was identified as the father of Nevaeh’s child. On August 14, 2022, authorities arrested 26-year-old Marquavious Spearman in nearby Russell County. Evidence presented in court included testimony that the injured passenger identified "Nevaeh Nevels' baby daddy" as the shooter. Investigators also found text messages showing Spearman had arranged to fight another man who was in a relationship with Nevaeh, and that Spearman later sent a message to that man stating Nevaeh was dead. Witnesses reported seeing a blue Ford Mustang near the scene, a car police confirmed was registered to Spearman.
Marquavious Spearman was extradited to Muscogee County and charged with murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. During his first court appearance on August 16, 2022, he pleaded not guilty, and his case was bound over to the Superior Court. The case later concluded when Marquavious Spearman pleaded guilty to the murder of Nevaeh Nevels. He was sentenced to life in prison.
