In the early hours of a summer morning in Valdosta, Georgia, a dispute at the Park Chase Apartments tragically cut short the life of 32-year-old Martevalous L. Williams Sr. On July 18, 2024, at approximately 3:35 a.m., the Valdosta Police Department received a 911 call reporting a shooting at the apartment complex. Upon arrival, officers discovered the African American male in a stairwell with a gunshot wound to his torso. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of both the officers and Emergency Medical Technicians from South Georgia Medical Center, Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The investigation that followed uncovered a grim narrative of a disagreement turned deadly. Detectives determined that Williams had been involved in an altercation with two other men, 32-year-old Darius Kitchen and Williams' own 26-year-old brother, Clarence Eady. At some point during the dispute, a firearm was produced, and Williams was fatally shot. The investigation was hampered by the inconsistent and untruthful accounts provided by Kitchen and Eady.
Following their interviews with law enforcement, both Darius Kitchen and Clarence Eady were arrested and taken to the Lowndes County Jail. Kitchen faced severe charges, including felony murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The victim's brother, Clarence Eady, was charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of an officer. Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan described the incident as a 'senseless act of violence' and expressed disbelief that the victim's own brother, who was present at the shooting, was uncooperative with the investigation. The tragic event left Williams' children without a father and a family grieving a profound loss.
