In the late hours of a Sunday night in Valdosta, Georgia, tragedy unfolded, leaving a family grieving and a community searching for answers. On May 12, 2024, at approximately 11:55 p.m., the sound of gunfire echoed through the 300 block of East Hill Avenue, prompting numerous calls to emergency services. When Valdosta police officers arrived at the scene, they discovered 32-year-old Jonathan Antonio Vicks, an African American male from the nearby town of Quitman, lying unresponsive in the middle of the road. He had sustained a gunshot wound.
Emergency responders rendered aid to Vicks before rushing him to South Georgia Medical Center. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on the afternoon of May 13, 2024. The incident, which is now being investigated as a homicide, also left two other men with gunshot wounds. Their connection to the shooting remains unclear as one of the men left the hospital before he could be interviewed by police, and the other refused to cooperate with detectives.
Investigators have recovered surveillance footage from the area which shows that a large number of people were present in a parking lot and the surrounding vicinity at the time of the shooting. Valdosta Police Chief Leslie Manahan has publicly urged any witnesses to come forward with information that could shed light on the events of that night and bring a measure of solace to Vicks's grieving family.
In the days following the shooting, there were erroneous reports suggesting that a suspect had been taken into custody. However, the Valdosta Police Department later clarified that no arrests have been made in connection with the death of Jonathan Antonio Vicks. The investigation remains active as authorities continue to seek leads and appeal to the public for any information that might help them identify and apprehend the person or persons responsible for this senseless act of violence.
