In the days leading up to Christmas, a domestic disturbance in a Valdosta, Georgia, residence escalated to a tragic conclusion, leaving a young boy dead and his father facing murder charges. On the afternoon of Friday, December 22, 2023, thirteen-year-old Lavonte Seward Jr. was fatally shot. He was transported to South Georgia Medical Center by a private vehicle, but despite efforts to save his life, he was pronounced deceased.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to the boy's father, 38-year-old Lavonte Seward Sr., as the primary suspect. Authorities arrested him in connection with the death of his son. According to reports, the shooting occurred following a domestic incident within their home. The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office took Seward Sr. into custody and initially charged him with murder, with the expectation of additional charges to follow as the investigation progressed. He was subsequently booked into the Lowndes County Jail.
Following the initial arrest, the case was presented to a Lowndes County Grand Jury. In March 2024, Lavonte Seward Sr. was indicted on multiple felony charges related to the death of his son. The grand jury returned a true bill of indictment for felony murder, aggravated assault-family violence, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and cruelty to children in the first degree. The community mourned the loss of the young teen, with funeral services held on the final day of the year. The case against Lavonte Seward Sr. is now proceeding through the judicial system.
