On September 19, 1978, Lloyd Dudley Jones, a 31-year-old African-American man, was working his shift as a taxi driver. At approximately 5:55 p.m., while in the 1100 block of 2nd Street, NE, he was shot and killed inside his cab.
A resident of the neighborhood discovered Mr. Jones's parked taxi around 6 p.m.
and found him inside, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the left side of his neck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators from the D.C. police believe the fatal shot was fired by a passenger from within the vehicle. The motive appeared to be a robbery or an attempted robbery, a conclusion drawn from the circumstances of the crime. At the time, he was the fourth taxi driver to be killed during a robbery attempt in the city since that April.
