Vishnu Bhalchandra Pandit, a 61-year-old Indian-American man, was among the twelve victims of a mass shooting that took place at the Washington Navy Yard on September 16, 2013. A kind and gentle man, Pandit had built a life in the United States after immigrating from Mumbai, India. He was a dedicated marine engineer and naval architect who took great pride in his more than 25 years of civilian service with the U.S. Navy.
His work was a significant part of his life, and he was highly respected by his colleagues.
The morning of the tragedy began like any other for Pandit as he went to work at the Naval Sea Systems Command headquarters in Building 197. The perpetrator, 34-year-old Aaron Alexis, a former Navy reservist working as a contractor, entered the building with a valid pass. Just after 8:00 a.m., Alexis commenced his attack, moving through the building and firing indiscriminately at the people he encountered. The shooting caused chaos and panic as employees sought safety, and law enforcement responded to the active shooter situation.
The rampage lasted for over an hour, during which Alexis moved between different floors of the building, continuing his assault. The attack ended when he was fatally shot by police. In the aftermath, it was discovered that Alexis was driven by delusional beliefs that he was being controlled by extremely low-frequency electromagnetic waves. There were no other suspects, and no arrests were made as the sole perpetrator was killed at the scene. Vishnu Bhalchandra Pandit's life was tragically cut short that day, leaving behind a grieving family and community who remembered him as a loving husband, father, and a proud American.
