In the late afternoon of Friday, March 22, 2024, the sounds of gunshots shattered the day in a Southeast, Washington, D.C. neighborhood. When police officers from the Seventh District arrived at the 2900 block of Gainesville Street, Southeast, just after 3:00 p.m., they began to search the area. Their search led them to the nearby 2800 block of Hartford Street, Southeast, where they discovered a man unconscious and not breathing, suffering from a gunshot wound.
The man was identified as
29-year-old Dimitrious Tre'von Brown of Northeast, D.C. Despite the arrival of D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services, there were no signs of life, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation into the death of the adult male was quickly taken over by the Metropolitan Police Department's Homicide Branch.
The investigation led to a significant development nearly two months later. On Thursday, May 16, 2024, members of the Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force, acting on a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, took 21-year-old Monteze Morton of Southeast, D.C., into custody. Morton was subsequently transported to the Homicide Branch and charged with First Degree Murder while Armed in connection with the shooting death of Dimitrious Brown.
Court documents later revealed that the fatal encounter allegedly stemmed from an argument. Brown was reportedly attempting to strike an individual who was Morton's ex-girlfriend. It was at that moment that Morton is alleged to have intervened and shot Brown. During a subsequent court hearing on June 27, 2024, a D.C. Superior Court judge found that there was probable cause for the first-degree murder charge against Morton. The defense had argued for self-defense, suggesting that Brown appeared to be reaching for his waistband after having assaulted Morton's friend. However, the prosecution pointed out that Morton did not know Brown prior to the incident and that no firearm was found on Brown's person. The judge ultimately ruled that there was insufficient evidence to support the self-defense claim and that the act appeared to be premeditated. Morton is currently being held without bond awaiting trial.
