On August 26, 2002, 14-year-old African American male John Lewis Ball was tragically killed in a mass shooting in Rutledge, Alabama, near Luverne. The incident claimed the lives of six individuals, all members of the Ball family: John Lewis Ball; his brothers, 19-year-old Jerry C.
