On July 8, 1971, Assistant Chief of Police Drexel Rushing of the Luverne Police Department in Alabama was fatally shot while attempting to arrest an escapee from the Brantley City Jail. The suspect, who had been detained on a drunk driving charge, opened fire during the apprehension, striking Assistant Chief Rushing in the right side of the chest. He succumbed to his injuries shortly after 3 a.m., becoming the first officer in the department's history to be killed in the line of duty.
