In December 2014, Maurice Williams-Brunson, a 20-year-old African American man, was arrested in connection with Kiana's murder. Williams-Brunson had a prior criminal record, including an arrest for manslaughter in 2013 related to another drive-by shooting. He was charged with murder in Kiana's case and faced additional scrutiny due to the fact that Kiana was pregnant at the time of her death.
The arrest of Williams-Brunson provided some measure of relief to Kiana's family and the community, but the pain of her loss remained.
