On June 29, 2023, in Leming, Texas, approximately 30 miles south of San Antonio, authorities responded to a house fire on Peach Tree Street. Inside the residence, they discovered the body of 43-year-old Laura West, who had been fatally shot. Her roommate, 33-year-old Mary Heinz, was missing, though her personal belongings and vehicle remained at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified 27-year-old Rosendo Jesus Montoya as a suspect.
Montoya, a former coworker of Heinz at a local McDonald's, had developed an obsessive infatuation with her after a brief relationship, which Heinz had ended. This unreciprocated interest escalated into stalking behavior.
Under surveillance, Montoya was observed disposing of black plastic bags into a dumpster near his workplace in Pleasanton. Upon retrieval, these bags were found to contain partial human remains. Confronted by law enforcement, Montoya confessed to the murders of both women and led authorities to Heinz's body, which he had concealed in a rural area near Poteet.
Montoya admitted to fatally shooting both Heinz and West with a 9mm handgun he had legally purchased a month prior. He had entered their home with the intent to kill Heinz; West was killed upon arriving home during the incident. In an attempt to destroy evidence, Montoya set fire to the residence before fleeing with Heinz's body.
In July 2024, Montoya pleaded guilty to capital murder charges and was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As part of the plea agreement, he waived his right to appeal, ensuring he will spend the remainder of his life incarcerated. This resolution spared the victims' families the ordeal of a prolonged trial and potential appeals.
