On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Mansfield 'Man Man' Eugene Rutherford was gathered with friends on the front porch of his residence at 1516 9th Avenue North, celebrating what would have been his 23rd birthday just two days later. The festive atmosphere was shattered around 11:00 p.m.
when two men approached the group and opened fire.
In the ensuing chaos, Rutherford, a 22-year-old male, was fatally struck by the gunfire. Four other individuals at the gathering, ranging in age from 18 to 32, also sustained injuries but survived the attack. Emergency services transported Rutherford to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
