In the early morning hours of Friday, December 19, 2025, a violent incident unfolded in the Northeast section of Washington, D.C., resulting in the death of a 44-year-old male named Melvin Saunders. At approximately 2:37 a.m., officers from the Fifth District of the Metropolitan Police Department responded to a call reporting a shooting inside a residential building.
Upon their arrival at the apartment located in the 1000 block of North Capitol Street, NE, law enforcement personnel gained entry and located the victim, who was suffering from a critical gunshot wound.
First responders found the victim unconscious and not breathing. Personnel from DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the location to provide aid, but despite their life-saving efforts, the injuries proved too severe. Saunders was pronounced dead at the scene. The area was subsequently secured to allow detectives from the Homicide Branch to canvas the scene and collect evidence related to the fatal shooting.
As of the days immediately following the event, the Metropolitan Police Department has not reported any arrests in connection with the case. The investigation remains active and ongoing as authorities work to identify a suspect and determine a motive for the homicide. Police officials have offered a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone who can provide information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this crime, urging the public to contact the department or submit anonymous tips.
