In the summer of 2018, a dispute between roommates in a Southeast Washington, D.C. townhouse culminated in the tragic death of 24-year-old Keon Wallace. A Black male, Wallace was found on June 25, 2018, inside the residence on Skyland Place, SE, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The events leading to his death began with an argument with his roommate, Kenneil Cole, who was also 24 years old at the time.
The disagreement reportedly escalated to a violent confrontation.
Cole, who worked as a legal assistant, later told authorities that the argument intensified when Wallace produced a semi-automatic pistol. According to Cole's account, he managed to wrestle the firearm away from Wallace and subsequently shot him in an act of self-defense. However, the nature of Wallace's injuries, which included gunshot wounds to the back of his head and the middle of his back, led investigators to question this narrative. Cole was arrested and charged with second-degree murder while armed.
Following his arrest, Cole turned himself in to the authorities. During legal proceedings, his defense maintained that the shooting was a justifiable act of self-defense. Prosecutors, however, pointed to the number and location of the wounds as evidence to the contrary. Cole was initially held in custody but was later released under court supervision as the case progressed. After years of legal maneuvering, the case took a significant turn. On February 1, 2023, the murder charge against Kenneil Cole was dismissed. Prosecutors concluded that they could not sufficiently disprove his claim of self-defense.
