In the evening hours of April 6, 2023, in a west valley neighborhood of Phoenix, Arizona, a sequence of events unfolded that would end in the tragic death of 18-year-old Anthony Muriel. Around 6:45 p.m., Phoenix police officers were dispatched to the vicinity of 35th Avenue and McClellan Boulevard after receiving a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered evidence that a shooting had indeed occurred, but the victim was nowhere in sight.
As law enforcement began to
organize a search of the area for anyone who might have been involved, the investigation took an unexpected turn. A juvenile male voluntarily contacted officers at the Phoenix Police Department headquarters. The information he provided led police to a different location, an alley near 41st Avenue and Missouri Avenue. It was there they found Anthony Muriel. He had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The juvenile male who had come forward was identified as the suspect in the shooting. He was taken into custody and subsequently booked on charges that include murder. Homicide detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting and the events that transpired afterward. While an arrest has been made, the motive behind the incident remains part of the ongoing investigation by the Phoenix Police Department.
