Bruce E. Wright, a 33-year-old Black/African American male from Dover, Delaware, was killed on the afternoon of March 24, 2022, in the Capitol Park community of Dover. Delaware State Police said troopers were called to Senator Avenue at about 3:50 p.m. for a reported shooting and found Wright in the driver's seat of a parked vehicle. He had been shot and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators said the encounter began when Marcus Bailey, then 18, of Wilmington, got into the back
seat of Wright's parked car. Early police accounts said Bailey spoke with Wright before demanding his property, and that Wright was shot in the upper torso before Bailey fled. Later court and prosecution records described the case as a robbery tied to a drug deal, saying Bailey had arranged to meet Wright near the Capital Park housing development to buy marijuana products, refused to pay, shot Wright in the head, and fled with the stolen drugs.
Wright's death left behind the story of a Delaware man remembered by family as protective, loving, direct, and funny. Obituary information described him as a lifelong Delaware resident who worked as a night auditor at a Quality Inn in Ocean City, Maryland, and who loved history, science, politics, sports, and calling into radio shows. He was survived by his wife, children, sisters, nephew, extended relatives, and friends.
Delaware State Police identified Marcus Bailey as the suspect within two days. On March 26, 2022, Bailey was taken into custody without incident during a traffic stop at the Wawa parking lot in Long Neck. He was taken to Delaware State Police Troop 7 and charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on a $1.12 million cash bond.
As the case moved through court, prosecutors said the evidence against Bailey was strong. A Delaware Superior Court order later stated that an eyewitness at the murder scene identified Bailey as the person who shot Wright while robbing him. The same witness said she had arranged the meeting between Bailey and Wright and that Bailey wore a black ski mask during the crime. Police later found a black ski mask in the trunk of the vehicle used to flee the scene, and court records said Bailey's DNA was found on it. The court also referenced a note found in one of Bailey's phone applications and a recorded Department of Correction call that prosecutors argued showed consciousness of guilt.
Bailey's trial was scheduled to begin on April 22, 2024, but just before jury selection he pleaded guilty in Kent County Superior Court to reduced charges of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Under the plea terms reported by the Delaware Department of Justice, Bailey agreed that he would not request less than 20 years in prison at sentencing, while the State agreed to cap its prison recommendation at 30 years.
On the day sentencing was expected in August 2024, Bailey tried to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming he had not entered it knowingly and voluntarily and alleging pressure from his attorneys and mother. In a February 3, 2025 order, the Delaware Superior Court rejected that request, finding no fair and just reason to allow him to withdraw the plea. The court said Bailey had knowingly and voluntarily pleaded guilty, had benefited from the reduced charges, and had not shown a reasonable basis to claim legal innocence. Public online records reviewed showed the plea remained in place, with sentencing to be set after the court denied Bailey's motion.
