Sharif Osman Hadi, a prominent male activist and leader of the Inqilab Moncho, was fatally shot in Dhaka, Bangladesh, on December 12, 2025, while campaigning for the parliamentary elections. He was traveling in a battery-powered rickshaw in the Bijoynagar area when an assailant on a motorcycle shot him in the head. Following the attack, Hadi was initially treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and then transferred to Evercare Hospital before being airlifted to Singapore for advanced medical
care. Despite the efforts of medical teams, he succumbed to his injuries on December 18, 2025. His death was officially announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Singapore.
The investigation into Hadi's murder led to numerous arrests and the identification of a prime suspect. Police identified the shooter as Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Rahul, and his accomplice who drove the motorcycle as Md Alamgir Sheikh. Faisal fled the country and is believed to be in India's Meghalaya state. Indian police have arrested two individuals, Putti and Sami, for allegedly assisting Faisal after he crossed the border. In Bangladesh, at least eleven people have been arrested in connection with the case, including Faisal's parents, his wife, his brother-in-law, and a friend. Six of those arrested have provided confessional statements to the court. During the investigation, police recovered two foreign-made pistols, ammunition, the motorcycle used in the crime, and other evidence.
The murder of Hadi, a key figure in the student-led uprising that led to a change in government, triggered significant unrest and protests. In response to his death, the government declared a day of national mourning and assured that the case would be handled by a fast-track tribunal to ensure a speedy trial. Hadi's brother, Omar Hadi, has publicly alleged that elements within the interim government were involved in the assassination plot to disrupt the upcoming elections. The government has provided financial assistance to Hadi's family and appointed his elder brother to a diplomatic position in Birmingham, UK. The authorities in Bangladesh are continuing their efforts to bring all individuals involved in the murder to justice.
