In the early morning hours of June 7, 2022, a burst of violence shattered the quiet of an Ensley neighborhood in Birmingham, Alabama, claiming the life of 25-year-old Domonique Deandre' Williams. An African American male, Williams was seated in a vehicle on the 1700 block of Avenue J at approximately 6:10 a.m. when the car was riddled with more than two dozen bullets.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office later confirmed that Williams succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds at the scene.
The brutal nature of the attack, with such a high volume of gunfire, led Birmingham Police Department investigators to believe that Williams and his companion were specifically targeted. A second person inside the vehicle was also struck by the hail of bullets but managed to survive the harrowing ordeal. This violent incident was alarmingly similar to another shooting that had occurred in the same vicinity less than 24 hours prior, sparking concerns about an escalation of violence within the community.
In the wake of the tragic event, family and friends gathered to mourn the loss of a young man remembered for his vibrant spirit and the positive influence he had on those around him. A funeral service to honor his memory was held on June 22, 2022, at the Tabernacle of Faith Ministry in Birmingham. Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas from law enforcement for anyone with information to come forward, no suspects have been publicly identified or taken into custody in connection with the murder of Domonique Williams. His death contributed to a particularly violent year for Birmingham, which saw a significant and concerning rise in homicides.
